Biography

Betty Armitage from Headingley, Leeds joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry and drove ambulances in the North African and Italian campaigns. She drove through minefields at El Alamein to evacuate wounded troops and later served at the Cassino front. Her vehicle was hit by shrapnel twice, and she suffered a permanent hearing loss from nearby shell explosions. She returned to Leeds and worked as a district nurse.
