Biography
Auxiliary Fireman James Doran was one of the civilian heroes of the Belfast Blitz. On the night of the devastating Easter Tuesday Raid of 15 April 1941, when German bombers killed over 900 people in a single night, Doran responded to fires across the city. Belfast was horrifically unprepared — the city had only 26 fire pumps for a population of 415,000. Doran and his colleagues fought blazes with inadequate equipment and no protective gear. He was killed when a building collapsed on him while he was directing water onto a fire in the York Street area. He was 26 years old. Fire crews from as far as Dublin crossed the border to assist. Belfast's civil defence heritage remembers Doran and the 12 other firemen killed during the Blitz.
