Subedar Balwant Singh served with the 14th Punjab Regiment during the North African campaign. At the Battle of Enfidaville in Tunisia in April 1943, his company came under devastating crossfire. Balwant led a bayonet charge against the enemy position, personally killing several enemy soldiers and capturing a machine gun. Though mortally wounded during the attack, his actions allowed his company to advance and secure their objective. He was posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit. His family later settled in Birmingham, where they keep his memory alive.
