Biography

Private Arthur Solomon from Whitechapel served in the Jewish Brigade Group, the only exclusively Jewish military unit in the British Army. Formed in September 1944, the Brigade fought in Italy during the final months of the war, participating in the crossing of the Senio River. After VE Day, members of the Brigade helped organise the escape of Holocaust survivors to Palestine. Arthur was deeply affected by meeting survivors and hearing firsthand accounts of the camps. He returned to London and became a prominent figure in the East London Jewish community, dedicating his life to Holocaust education and remembrance.
