He worked in Hut 8 on naval Enigma decryption alongside Alan Turing and others. The work he helped accomplish is credited with shortening the war by an estimated two years. Bound by the Official Secrets Act, Arthur never spoke of his wartime work until the 1990s declassification. He returned to Oxford after the war and continued teaching mathematics until retirement.
