Biography
Captain Arthur Edward Smith served with the 1st Airborne Division and fought in the ill-fated Operation Market Garden at Arnhem in September 1944. He led his platoon in the desperate defence of the Oosterbeek perimeter for nine days against overwhelming German forces. He was killed during the final withdrawal across the Rhine. He was from a long-established Nottingham family with a tradition of military service.
