Corporal Anna Ivanovna Sokolova served as a field medic with the 62nd Army during the Battle of Stalingrad. Under constant bombardment, she evacuated wounded soldiers from the front lines, saving an estimated 45 lives during the fiercest fighting. She emigrated to Glasgow in 1989 to be near her grandchildren and became an active member of the local Russian community.
