Biography
Lieutenant Anna Belova served as a navigation officer with the Baltic Fleet, guiding minesweepers through the heavily mined waters of the Gulf of Finland during the siege of Leningrad. Her ship was struck by a mine in 1943; she helped organise the evacuation of the crew despite being wounded. After the war she became a professor of mathematics at Leningrad University and moved to Cambridge in 2001, where she continued to tutor students in her nineties.

Лейтенант Анна Белова служила штурманом на Балтийском флоте, проводя тральщики через густо заминированные воды Финского залива во время блокады Ленинграда. Её корабль подорвался на мине в 1943 году; несмотря на ранение, она помогла организовать эвакуацию экипажа. После войны стала профессором математики в Ленинградском университете и переехала в Кембридж в 2001 году.
