Biography
Chief Petty Officer Angus McLean served aboard the destroyer HMS Cossack, famous for the Altmark Incident in February 1940 when British prisoners were rescued from a German supply ship in Norwegian waters. McLean was among the boarding party. He later served on convoy escort duty in the Atlantic, surviving two sinkings when his ships were torpedoed. After each sinking, he volunteered for sea duty again. A Glaswegian from Govan who grew up watching ships being built on the Clyde, he said the sea was in his blood. He returned to the shipyards after the war.
