Biography

Lance Corporal Angus MacTavish served with the reconstituted 51st Highland Division after the original division was captured at Saint-Valéry in 1940. He fought at El Alamein where the Highland Division played a pivotal role in the breakout. He then participated in the Normandy landings and the advance through France and into Germany. Angus was among the Scottish soldiers who famously crossed the Rhine playing bagpipes. After the war he returned to Edinburgh and worked as a stonemason, helping to restore the city's historic buildings.
