Amy Johnson

Amy Johnson was one of the most famous aviators of the 1930s, the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia. During the war, she joined the Air Transport Auxiliary, ferrying military aircraft between bases.On 5 January 1941, Johnson was lost when her aircraft crashed into the Thames Estuary. The circumstances remain mysterious — some accounts suggest she was shot down by friendly fire. She was just 37. Her Yorkshire roots and Leeds connections make her one of the region's most celebrated war heroes.
