Biography
Leading Torpedo Operator Alistair MacLean served aboard several Royal Navy vessels including the destroyer HMS Doris on Arctic convoy duty. His harrowing experiences on convoys to Murmansk through submarine-infested and storm-lashed waters deeply affected him. After the war, these experiences inspired his writing career, including the novel HMS Ulysses, drawn from his own wartime suffering. He settled in Edinburgh and his family registered his story as part of the Arctic convoy commemoration.
