Alistair Campbell

Corporal Alistair Campbell from Glasgow served with the Chindits — the legendary long-range penetration forces that operated behind Japanese lines in Burma. During Operation Thursday in 1944, his column marched for weeks through dense jungle, destroying railway lines and ambushing supply routes. The Chindits suffered appalling casualty rates from combat, disease, and exhaustion. Alistair contracted malaria and was evacuated, but the experience marked him for life. He returned to Glasgow and worked quietly in engineering.
