Biography

Wing Commander Alan Fitzgerald flew Lancaster bombers with No. 101 Squadron RAF from RAF Ludford Magna. He completed 38 bombing missions over occupied Europe, including raids on the Ruhr dams, Hamburg, and Berlin. His aircraft carried the ABC (Airborne Cigar) jamming equipment designed to disrupt German night-fighter communications. Before the war, Fitzgerald studied English Literature at Christ Church, Oxford, and returned to the university after demobilisation to complete his doctorate. He became a fellow of Wadham College and spent the rest of his career at Oxford, though he rarely spoke about his wartime experiences.
