Description

A photograph of a bearded, gaunt soldier wearing a bush hat and carrying a machete, found inside a first edition of "Defeat Into Victory" by Field Marshal Slim at a rare book dealer in Bath. The soldier's appearance — extreme thinness, long beard, tattered uniform — is consistent with Chindit operations behind Japanese lines in Burma. A partial inscription reads "—indits, March 44, somewhere in B—."
