The Soviet War Memorial in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park commemorates the 27 million Soviet citizens and service personnel who died for the Allied Victory in the Second World War. Unveiled 9 May 1999.
The Soviet War Memorial stands in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, London SE1 6HZ, adjacent to the Imperial War Museum. The centrepiece is a 3.5-metre bronze sculpture named "Sorrowful" (Скорбящая) — a grieving woman holding a bell aloft — created by Volgograd sculptor Sergei Shcherbakov and mounted on a granite plinth.
The memorial was unveiled on 9 May 1999 — the 54th anniversary of Victory Day — in a joint ceremony by UK Secretary of State for Defence George Robertson and Russian Ambassador Yuri Fokin. The land was donated by the London Borough of Southwark.
The inscription reads: "This memorial commemorates the 27 million Soviet citizens & service men & women who died for the Allied Victory in WWII — WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM."
The memorial is managed by the Soviet War Memorial Trust and hosts three annual ceremonies: Victory Day (9 May), Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January), and Remembrance Sunday (second Sunday in November).
